Compress PDF
Shrink PDF file size while preserving image quality.
How Compress PDF works
Shrinks a PDF by re-encoding the images inside it. Text and vector drawings are left alone, so lettering doesn't get blurry. There are three levels: low compression keeps quality practically unchanged, the recommended level gives a clear saving while staying sharp on screen, and extreme compression gives the smallest file with visible loss in images.
For documents scanned in color that are really black and white, converting images to grayscale saves even more. "Remove metadata" deletes the title, author and XMP data. Our guide to reducing PDF file size covers the order to try things in.
Frequently asked questions
How much smaller will my file get?
It depends on what's inside. Scans and photo-heavy PDFs often lose more than half their size. Text-only PDFs are already small and gain little; in that case the tool tells you the file is already optimized.
Can I try different levels on the same file?
Yes. Change the setting on the result screen and compression runs again. Since the file isn't uploaded anywhere, you can try as many times as you like.
Is Compress PDF free? Do I need an account?
It’s free and there’s no sign-up. We don’t ask for an email address and we don’t put a Yeti watermark on your file.
Are my files uploaded to a server?
No. The file is processed in your browser’s memory on your own device and is never sent to Yeti’s servers. You can choose up to 20 files at a time, 25 MB each and 100 MB in total.
