Compress Image
Shrink JPG, PNG, WebP and SVG images without a visible loss in quality.
How Compress Image works
Makes photos and images small enough for an email, a website or an application form. JPG and WebP files are re-encoded; PNGs are reduced to a palette of up to 256 colours, the way pngquant does it, with dithering to keep gradients smooth. SVG files lose comments, editor leftovers and needless decimal places.
The Recommended level gives a clear saving with a loss you won’t notice on most images. Extreme compression produces the smallest file and scales images with a long edge over 1920 pixels down to 1920; Low compression keeps quality at the top and leaves PNGs lossless. If a result comes out bigger than the original, the original is kept as it is. Re-encoding also strips metadata such as location and camera details. To fit an upload form’s KB limit, see how to reduce image size in KB.
Frequently asked questions
Are animated GIFs compressed?
No. GIF files are left untouched so an animation isn’t reduced to a single frame. If you need a smaller GIF, shrink its dimensions with Resize Image.
How can I make a photo even smaller?
File size depends mostly on the number of pixels. Taking a 4000-pixel photo down to 1600 pixels for the web saves far more than changing the compression level. Try Resize Image first, then compress.
Is Compress Image free? Do I need an account?
It’s free and there’s no sign-up. We don’t ask for an email address and we don’t put a Yeti watermark on your file.
Are my files uploaded to a server?
No. The file is processed in your browser’s memory on your own device and is never sent to Yeti’s servers. You can choose up to 20 images at a time, 25 MB and 24 megapixels each.
