How to merge PDF files into one (free, on any device)

The easiest way to combine PDF files into one: setting the order, merging on iPhone, Android, Mac and Windows, locked PDFs and oversized results.

You have five separate PDFs on your desktop: a passport scan, a degree certificate, a transcript, a proof of address, and an application portal that says, in bold, "upload ONE file". Sound familiar? "How to merge PDF files into one" is one of the most searched PDF questions on the internet, and that is exactly why. Life hands us documents in pieces; forms want them in one piece.

The good news: merging PDFs is the easiest thing you can do with a PDF. This guide covers how to combine PDF files on Windows, Mac, iPhone and Android, how to get the order right, and what to do when the merged file turns out too big to upload.

How do I merge PDF files into one? (The short answer)

  1. Open Merge PDF.
  2. Select the PDFs you want to combine, or drag and drop them.
  3. Drag the file cards into the right order.
  4. Press "Merge PDFs" and download your single PDF.

That's it. No account, no email address, no watermark on the result. The files are combined inside your browser and never uploaded to a server, which matters more than you'd think when the PDFs are a lease, a payslip or a medical letter.

A note from Yeti: merging doesn't redraw your pages, it copies them as they are. No quality loss, and the text stays selectable. Solid as an iceberg.

How do I put the pages in the right order?

Order is the only tricky part of combining PDFs. Application packs usually want a specific sequence, and a jumbled one makes the person checking it very unhappy.

  • Drag and drop: grab a file card and move it where it belongs.
  • Sort by name: if your files are named "01-passport.pdf", "02-degree.pdf" and so on, sorting A to Z does the whole job in one click. Numbering files up front saves a lot of fiddling on long lists.
  • Page by page: to move a single page out of the middle of one file, delete a page or rotate one, use Organize Pages. It also accepts several PDFs and lets you shuffle individual pages between them.

For long document packs, turn on "Add bookmarks". Each file gets a bookmark where it starts, so whoever opens the result can jump straight to "Transcript" from the side panel.

Can I merge PDFs on my phone?

Yes, and you don't need an app. Merge PDF runs in your phone's browser: Chrome, Safari, Samsung Internet. When you tap "Select files", your phone opens its file picker; PDFs you saved from email or WhatsApp are usually in "Downloads".

To merge PDFs on an iPhone you have two options:

  • Open Yeti in Safari and pick the files (same steps as above).
  • In the iPhone Files app, select the files, then tap More (⋯) > Create PDF. It's quick, but you can't easily control the order, so rename the files first.

Android has no built-in merge feature, so the browser is the easiest route.

How do I merge PDF files on a Mac or Windows PC?

On a Mac, Preview can merge PDFs too: open the first PDF, show thumbnails in the sidebar and drag the other PDFs into that sidebar. It takes a steady hand, but it works.

Windows has no built-in way to combine PDF files, which is why so many people end up installing a program or using an online tool. If you'd rather not install anything, a tool that runs in the browser is the comfortable middle ground, and the free version of Adobe Reader can't merge files anyway.

The merged PDF is too large. Now what?

Merging doesn't shrink anything: the result is roughly the sum of the files. Upload forms, on the other hand, love limits like 2 MB, 5 MB or 10 MB. Here's what to do:

  1. Run the merged file through Compress PDF on the "Recommended" level. Scanned documents often lose more than half their size.
  2. Still too big? Remove pages you don't need with Remove Pages: blank backs, pages scanned twice.
  3. If the portal accepts several files, cut the document into parts with Split PDF.

We walk through the full order of things to try in how to reduce PDF file size.

Can I merge password-protected PDFs?

Yes, if you know the password. Bank statements and e-invoices often arrive locked. After adding the file, press "Enter password" on its card and type it in; the file joins the list. You can't merge a PDF whose password you don't know, and that's how it should be.

Frequently asked questions

Is merging PDFs free?

Yes. Merging PDFs with Yeti is completely free, with no sign-up, email or daily limit. You can combine up to 20 files per operation, 25 MB per file and 200 pages in total.

Does merging PDFs reduce quality?

No. Pages aren't recompressed; they're copied into the new file as they are. Text stays selectable and links stay clickable.

Can I combine JPGs and PDFs into one file?

Convert the photos with JPG to PDF first, then merge them with the other PDFs. For documents shot with a phone camera, Scan Document gives a cleaner, more readable result.

Can I split the merged PDF again later?

Yes. Split PDF cuts it by page ranges or into one file per page.

Are my files uploaded to a server?

No. The merge happens in your browser. You can test it yourself: open the page, switch off your internet connection and merge anyway. We explain how to check any tool in this post.

In short

All you need to merge PDF files is a browser. Pick the files, set the order, merge. If the result is too big, compress it; if you need to move individual pages, open Organize Pages. That upload form has nothing on you now.
