How to remove the background from a photo (transparent or white)

How to erase a photo’s background and save it as a transparent PNG or white-background JPG, with shooting tips for clean edges and ID photos.

You took the perfect product photo. Great light, great angle, the product practically glows. And in the background: the laundry basket. Or you nailed a profile picture, except the crowd behind you is smiling too. Removing the background exists for exactly these moments: it keeps the subject and erases everything else.

This guide shows how to remove the background from a photo, how to make it transparent or white, and what to watch for to get the cleanest result. No Photoshop skills needed; a browser is enough.

How do I remove the background from a photo?

  1. Open Remove Background and pick your photo.
  2. The AI model finds the subject (a person, a product, a pet) and separates it from the background.
  3. Choose the result: a transparent PNG, a white background, or any solid color.
  4. Download.

The first time, the model is downloaded once (about 9 MB); after that, photos are processed much faster. The model runs inside your browser, so your photo is never uploaded to a server. When the photo has your face in it, that's a nice feeling.

A note from Yeti: I live on snowy mountains, so a white background is my natural habitat. Try it, it suits you.

How do I make a background transparent?

For a transparent background, download the result as a PNG. JPG doesn't support transparency, so transparent areas get filled with a color. A transparent PNG is ideal for:

  • Placing a logo or product on a slide, poster or website
  • Putting a person on top of another design
  • Making stickers

Transparent PNGs can be large, because PNG is lossless and also stores the transparency. To shrink one, run it through Compress Image: it turns the PNG into a palette image and keeps the transparency.

Making the background white (product and ID photos)

Online stores usually want product photos on plain white, and some application portals want ID photos on a plain light background. In Remove Background, choose white or another solid color and save the result as a JPG. JPG means a small file, which fits under upload limits more easily.

If the photo is for an official document, check the rules first: some authorities don't allow any editing at all. Shooting the photo in front of a plain wall is always the safest option.

Tips for the cleanest result

AI gets a lot right, but it can't work miracles. Four things make a big difference:

  • Contrast. The subject should stand out from the background. A white shirt against a white wall makes the model's life hard.
  • Light. The subject's edges should be clear and well lit. Strong backlight burns out the edges.
  • Focus. Blurry edges mean blurry outlines. Portrait mode's background blur actually helps.
  • One subject. One person or one product in the frame.

The hard cases are predictable: flyaway hair, glasses, sheer curtains and transparent packaging. Expect a few leftovers around the edges there.

What if bits of the background are left over?

  • If fragments remain around the edges, reshoot against a plainer background if you can.
  • Trim extra space with Crop Image; it has ready-made ratios for social media (1:1, 4:5, 9:16).
  • For brightness, contrast, frames and filters, use the Photo Editor.
  • Need a small product shot at a bigger size? Upscale Image enlarges it 2× or 4×.

Frequently asked questions

Is removing a background free?

Yes. No sign-up, no watermark, no daily limit. Photos up to 25 MB and 24 megapixels are supported.

Does background removal work on a phone?

Yes, in your phone's browser. Because the model is downloaded the first time, the first photo can take a moment, so Wi-Fi is a good idea. Older phones process large photos more slowly.

Can I replace the background with another picture?

The tool gives you a transparent or solid-color background. To put the subject in front of a different scene, download the transparent PNG and place it over the new background in any design app.

Why does hair look rough at the edges?

Fine, flyaway strands blend into the background, and the model can't separate every single one. Photos taken against a plain, contrasting background come out much cleaner.

Is my photo sent anywhere?

No. The model runs on your device, inside your browser. The photo is never uploaded to a server.

In short

Removing a background is now a one-click job: pick the photo, download a transparent PNG or a white JPG. Start with a contrasting, well-lit, sharp photo and the result looks almost hand-made. The laundry basket stays your secret.
