Instagram won't take a PDF. Some application forms say "JPG only". You want one page of a report on a slide. In a chat app, a PDF needs downloading before anyone sees it, while an image just shows up. In short: sometimes a PDF needs to be a picture, which is why "convert PDF to JPG" is one of the most searched conversions there is.
This guide covers how to convert a PDF to JPG, which resolution to pick, how to choose between JPG and PNG, and how to do it on a phone.
How to convert a PDF to JPG, step by step
- Open PDF to JPG and select your PDF.
- Choose JPG or PNG as the format.
- Pick a resolution: Low, Normal, or High/Print.
- Optionally type the pages you want ("1-3, 5"). Leave it empty and every page is converted.
- Press "Convert to images". A single page downloads as one image; several pages arrive as one ZIP.
No software to install, no sign-up. The PDF is turned into images inside your browser and never uploaded to a server.
A note from Yeti: every page becomes its own image. A 40-page PDF gives you 40 pictures, so don't panic when you open the ZIP. I did, the first time.
Which resolution should I choose?
Resolution decides how detailed (and how big) the images are.
| Option | Use it for | Note |
|---|---|---|
| Low | Small previews and thumbnails | Smallest files |
| Normal (150 DPI) | Screens, chat apps, social media, slides | Ideal for most jobs |
| High / Print | Printing, documents people will zoom into | Files get large |
If small print on the page needs to be readable (a contract, a table, an invoice), go one level up. If people will only glance at it on a screen, Normal is plenty.
JPG or PNG?
- JPG: for pages with photos, scans and colorful images. Small files.
- PNG: for sharp-edged diagrams, screenshots, pages with few colors and small text. Text looks crisper, but files are bigger.
Not sure? Pick JPG and keep the JPG quality around 85%. If the text looks soft, try PNG.
How to convert a PDF to JPG on a phone
The same tool works in your phone's browser. When you convert several pages, they download as a ZIP:
- On an iPhone, tap the ZIP in the Files app and it opens as a folder. Select the images and use Share > Save Image to put them in Photos.
- On Android, most file managers open ZIPs. If you only need one page, type its number and convert just that page; no ZIP at all.
The other way round: JPG to PDF
To turn photos into a PDF, use JPG to PDF. It puts several images in order and combines them into one PDF. If you're photographing documents, Scan Document gives a more readable result; there are tips in turning phone photos into a PDF.
Converting to an image has a price
When a PDF becomes a JPG, each page turns into a photo. That means:
- The text can no longer be selected or searched.
- Links stop working.
- Text gets blurry as you zoom in (pixels, not vectors).
So keep the original as a PDF and use the JPG only for sharing. If you need the text inside the document, PDF to Text or PDF to Word are the better tools.
