PDF to PDF/A
Prepare an archival copy by adding PDF/A structures; verify compliance independently.
How PDF to PDF/A works
Prepares the PDF/A version of a document, the variant of PDF defined for long-term archiving. Fonts are embedded, a color profile is added and the document declares itself PDF/A in its metadata. There are three levels: PDF/A-1b, the oldest and strictest; PDF/A-2b, recommended for most documents, with support for transparency and JPEG2000; and PDF/A-3b, which also allows embedded files.
For complex documents, "Convert pages to images" clears conformance problems but makes the text unselectable. Before you submit, we recommend checking the result with an independent validator such as veraPDF. More in our guide What is PDF/A.
Frequently asked questions
Which level should I choose?
If no particular level is required, choose PDF/A-2b. Use PDF/A-1b only when it's explicitly asked for, and PDF/A-3b when you need to attach other files.
Can an encrypted PDF become PDF/A?
PDF/A doesn't allow encryption. Remove the password with Unlock PDF first, then convert.
Is PDF to PDF/A free? Do I need an account?
It’s free and there’s no sign-up. We don’t ask for an email address and we don’t put a Yeti watermark on your file.
Are my files uploaded to a server?
No. The file is processed in your browser’s memory on your own device and is never sent to Yeti’s servers. You can choose up to 20 files at a time, 25 MB each and 100 MB in total.
